    About Us

    The District's Purpose

A Scouting district is a geographical area of the BSA local council, determined by the council executive board. District leaders mobilize resources to ensure the growth and success of Scouting units within the district's territory.

The purpose of the district is to work through chartered organizations and community groups to organize and support successful units. The end result of effective district support: more and more youth members receiving a better and better program.

    District Chairman: Kevin Selzer
    District Commissioner: Jason Pettis
District Professionals: Elisa Corry (District Director) and Bridgette Floyd (District Executive).

    The District Committee

This committee coordinates all the functions of the district for the purposes of (a) organizing and supporting Gateway District Quality Units, (b) carrying out the policies and objectives of the council, and (c) extending the program to the greatest number of youth.

District members at large are elected annually in the district annual meeting. All chartered organization representatives (selected by community organizations operating units) are automatically members of the council and of their district committee, thus providing close tie-in with chartered organizations.

    What is a Commissioner?

Commissioners are district and council leaders who help Scout units succeed. They coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews and Varsity teams. Commissioner help maintain the standards of the Boy Scouts of America. They also oversee the unit charter renewal plan so that each unit reregisters on time with an optimum number of youth and adult members.

    Roles the Commissioner Plays

The Commissioner is the liaison between the local council and Scouting units. The commissioner is successful when units effectively deliver the ideals of Scouting to their members. Specifically, a commissioner:

    • Builds relationships as a "friend to the unit", getting to know the people and character of the leadership team.
    • Provides advice and connections to other units, District, Council, and national resources.
    • Informs with up-to-date news from the District, Council, and National organization.
    • Ensures all leaders are trained.
    • Offers friendly and timely advice when challenges arise.
    • Is a resource for you!

Gateway District Award of Merit Recipients

    (1982 – 2018)

The District Award of Merit is the highest recognition that the Gateway District presents for outstanding service to youth. The recipients of this award have been judged on their service to Gateway District, the Boy Scouts of America, and their overall service to our community. Nominations occur in the Autumn and the award presented in the Spring. Use this form to submit a scouter for the Award of Merit. We also recommend one tracks his or her scouting experience using this "Scouter Resume", to aid in future recognition opportunities.
