Registered Adult Scouter Background Check Disclosures and Authorization

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is committed first and foremost to keeping youth safe. Part of that commitment includes continually updating our youth protection policies to help ensure we are always on the forefront of youth safety.

As you know, one of the BSA’s many barriers to abuse is a mandatory criminal background check during the adult volunteer application process. The BSA will now also perform periodic rechecks of criminal backgrounds to support the continued safety of youth in our programs.

Please complete the process listed below at your earliest availability to help us continue to provide the safest environment possible for our Scouts and leaders. Please note that these steps must be completed before your 2020 annual registration can be processed.

    1. Review the separate disclosure document linked below that is being provided to you separately for your review. It is titled “Background Check Disclosure.”
    2. Once you have reviewed that, print the separate document titled “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization.” Review the additional disclosures on that form, then complete and sign the Authorization using an ink/wet signature. Note: A print signature is required for this document. Electronic signatures will not be accepted.
    3. Turn in the signed “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization” form promptly to your unit leader or local council service center.
If you choose to decline the background check, or if you do not complete the Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization form and return it to your unit leader or local council service center, your 2020 annual registration will not be processed.

We are truly grateful for your continued commitment to keeping youth safe and for helping them learn, grow, and thrive through Scouting programs.

    Changes to Gateway District

2019 was quite a year in the Denver Area Council - girls were able to join Scouts BSA, we absorbed the Western Slope Council, we're finishing the formal separation between the BSA and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we saw 3400+ people attend one of the best Council Camporees in several cycles. And now, to end the year, is a reorganization of how Districts are drawn.

A Council-level committee has been working on this re-district plan for over a year, and their proposal will be voted on by the DAC board in October. Baring any last-minute issues, the proposal should pass and we'll see the changes taking place within the Denver Area Council, effective Jan. 1, 2020.

The plan is to reorganize around school districts. The biggest impact will be seen around Douglas County School District and Jefferson County School District. For Gateway, this means that we will be merging with Timberline to form a large west-side district. Units outside the JeffCo School district boundaries will be shifted into neighboring districts. The largest shift will be those in Broomfield moving over into Valley District.

The impact on individual units will be negligible. Packs and Troops will still meet, plan and attend activities, work on advancement, and operate as per usual. As you can imagine there will be several changes as to volunteer staffing. The leadership of combined Gateway-Timberline District are working out how the different committees and groups will function. It's a bit of a slow process as we work out the new leadership. More information will be coming out over the next few weeks, and we'll be discussing this at the October Roundtable as well.

A new name for the new District will be voted upon by Scout members soon.

Other changes in Denver Area Council: in the Southern area, Pioneer Trails will become part of Arapahoe District. There will be some slight changes to Centennial and none for Frontier District. As mentioned above, Valley will be expanding with the addition of Broomfield units.

If you have any questions on these changes, feel free to reach out to District Commissioenr Jason Pettis, or our Scouting Professionals - Elisa Thurston or Bridgette Floyd.
